Urie Bronfenbrenner
Bronfenbrenners theory explained how children learn through those close to them and environment surroundings. The Exosystem refers to the larger social systems including, neighbourhood, communities and public media (Drewery & Bird,2004). This theory links to Forest Schools as it is encouraging children and educator to get out in the outdoor centre environment and have a hands on experience where they can play, explore, and create to their hearts contempt |
Abraham Maslow (1908-1970)
Maslows theory proposed that human needs can be arranged in a Hierarchy. Lower needs need require attention and care before higher needs can be met (Clairborne & Drewery, 2004). The hierarchy that Maslow identified was focused on the human body, and the needs of safety, security, love and esteem must be met before humans can seek fulfilment (Pound, 2008). Within safety and security, comes exploration, as children need to feel safe and secure while exploring the environment around them. This links to Forest Schools as it is allowing children to explore the outdoors, make a muddy cake, and make links and reasoning to how the world works and why. In saying this, it also makes link to Te Whariki, New Zealand's early childhood curriculum, as we as educators are required to provide children with experiences to help children experience their community and local area. This can be done through providing excursions for your ece setting (Ministry of Education, 1996). |
